From reality to theory

Abigail Pereira Aranha

1) Theory of Theory

The quality of a set of ideas or a statement is measured in how it describes the real world. Someone's authority lies in how much they are right while describe or predict the real world. Without agreement with the real world, entire books lose their value even when they say they represent Science, the truth or the world as it is. Without agreement with the real world, no one is an expert on any subject, except perhaps in the lie, even if the person has something that looks like an imposing curriculum vitae. That principle of Deuteronomy 18: 22 is valid: "When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him". And the observation of the real world is what is called common sense, which the malicious people who want to pass as enlightened confuse with collective prejudice.

All that I said sounds strange to the general public, even when countries like Brazil have a negligible percentage of illiterates and a considerable increase in people with university degrees. But the disconnection between stream of ideas and reality is not exclusive to Brazil, nor is it a novelty brought by the socialist movement. Incidentally, without this disconnection, no religion existed or would be possible, as any atheist or agnostic can explain if he tells his experience of how he left the religious milieu.

When a person realizes that the real world is external to himself or herself and to his or her set of ideas, that person can, if recognizes value in the common sense and in the real world, abandon his belief. This is the case that I mentioned in passing just now, of atheists who were religious. This person can also have the same belief more moderately or can (why not?) have this same belief strengthened. For mentally healthy people, this depends on contact with the real world and beliefs that the person had before. But the doctrinaire person always goes to the real world without exiting from his or her belief. Because his or her mental basis (not just intellectual basis) is the own belief, not the rational exchange with the real world. When the doctrinaire person returns from the real world, he or she seems to have proved his or her ideas, but as if his or her set of ideas was the basis of the real world, not vice versa.

It's not enough for the theory to have a prediction of data or an event in the real world, just as it's not enough the believer (the one who has a belief) to expose his ideas in the midst of many proofs of true things. The conditional "if p, then q" is only true if q happens whenever p happens. To say that p happened because q happened is the Fallacy of Affirming the Consequent. Showing alleged evidences of q whose logical conclusion, instead of p, is r is the Fallacy of Irrelevant Conclusion. We also have the Fallacy of Equivocation, which is to use the same term with two meanings in the same argument. We also have the False Cause Fallacy, which is to state that p is the cause of q just because p happened first. I gave a small review of Logics here to explain it better.

2) Did not you understand?

If this all is too abstract, I will give a quick example that will clarify it. I return to the case of atheists who were religious. Why does every Christian who debates Christianism or Atheism with a real atheist turn to dust? Because if you talk to a Christian about atheists, you may notice that this Christian's atheist is not based on field research atheists, but on Christian doctrine plus some widespread prejudices in the Christian milieu. But with the atheist's Christian, the opposite occurs: this is based on Christianity itself, on the Christians he met and on himself when he was a Christian.

Another example: why does the anti-pornography movement and the abolitionist movement against prostitution achieve nothing but shake an already existing bubble? In fact, two bubbles: one from LGBT-Feminism and one conservative one. Because pornography and the prostitution of these movements are the prejudices of psychotic lesbians and mediocre beauty rustic women who do not have the courage to have and to give a decent sexual intercourse. All they say is the belief that (heterosexual) sex is aggression against women or sin. Everything these women discover about prostitution, pornography and even "softcores" is exactly what they have always known since they started to get together with simian lesbians or in the Sunday School teenagers class at her mother's church. Ah, one more review of Logic: admitting as a premise the very conclusion you want to reach is the fallacy of Petitio Principii (or Begging the Question).

I myself am an atheist woman, licentious and an advocate of pornography and prostitution; no text I wrote presupposes, to be valid, Atheism or the denial of chastity. But we have seen entire texts and books out there that can be struck if we refute or don't assume some postulate which is Catholic, or libertarian, or feminist, or evolutionist, etc.

I take advantage of the fact that I mentioned the anti-pornography movement to give one more example of the theory outside of reality. In practice, in the real world, feminists and conservatives against sex work are concordant (same-hearted). But according to themselves, lesbofeminists are clashing against the society based on Christianity and conservatives are denouncing, in an indirect via, the satanic and pedophile leftism.

3) Some few more notes

I return to my personal case to leave an illustration: I already had someone who said that I defend Atheism and prostitution to legitimize my non-chaste life. Yes, I have dicks in my pussy, in my mouth and in my ass, sometimes at the same time. But I don't make a writing in a philosophical format of my personal life and my reprehensible interior. It is the opposite: it's my day-to-day life that represents what I show that I think, and it's also my life that justifies Atheism. Having "complete" sex with 4 men today and with a married man and his son tomorrow demands a series of physical, sanitary, legal, security and financial cares that I don't comment on my blogs; but because of these cares I can say that debauchery is something good. It's valid for other things that I advocate and that I say. But it's curious that as well religious (especially Christians) as anti-Christian preachers of a better world do not seem to conceive that a person has a worldview beyond personal conveniences and pettiness, has a life according to what says he or she believes and preaches something that it works if practiced.

We have one more question: whoever vociferates his or her own ideas to answer an allegedly contrary idea makes a preaching, not a refutation. The refutation of a statement is made starting from the statement itself, not from a contrary belief. For example, we do not refute Creationism by admitting as a principle that the Theory of Evolution is science, just as we do not refute the Theory of Evolution by quoting the Bible. Both the refutation of Creationism and the one of Evolutionism will come from something external to both. The proof as well.

Well, that comes from another question: to what extent do defenders of certain ideas have words that are understandable to those who disagree or are not used to them? Better: to what extent do they themselves understand external ideas or the external audience? An area of knowledge needs its own vocabulary for faster communication between connoisseurs, and the use of this vocabulary by them may even fall into a certain automatism. But "tribes" can also develop their own vocabulary that falls into the same automatism, but in this case, this combines intellectual sedentary lifestyle with a lack of habituation with an external audience or, perhaps, with the external world. And this is known as "bubble". I will give some examples. The term "Men's Human Rights Activism" doesn't bring difficulty to generic understanding for those who have never seen it before, but "MHRA" or "MRA" does. Feminist lesbian reader, have you ever found a normal woman asking what is "rape culture"? Conservative Christian reader from England or United States, could you explain what the Bible is or who Jesus is to, for example, a Thai person who has been in your country for a short time (but who knows the language well)? The examples that I have shown, I call your attention here, are not exercises of oral or written explanation, they are exercises of association of words belonging to a community to real elements that are external to that community.

All of what I said is not about intellectual swindlers or chatty mentally ill people, it is about righteous persons who have not taken account of the flaws within the ideas they believe in. All of this applies to the great problem we have today in the socio-political area at least in Brazil and the United States, in which the opposition to psychopathic leftists and schizophrenic progressists is made of, at maximum, conservatives who are righteous and courageous, but dogmatic.
