6 punctuation marks you might be using incorrectly

Punctuation is the art of clarifying how a group of words falls together into contractions, clauses, and sentences. Unfortunately, it is not at all clear how some punctuation marks should be used! Let's take a look at several popular, though confusing, punctuation marks. Even if you think you've got the topic all sewn up, it's worth having another look.

1. Possessive apostrophes

The possessive apostrophe is a tricky one, hanging around the ends of words, but in several different ways. So how exactly should we be using it?

Let's start simple. For a singular noun, such as dog, you add an apostrophe plus s to the end: The dog's collar was covered in mud.

For a plural noun, such as elephants, you add an apostrophe to the end: The elephants' parade was troubled by rain.

For a plural noun that doesn't end with s, you add an apostrophe plus s to the end: The children's party went on as planned.

The place it gets tricky is with personal names, such as Charles and Ulysses, which already end in an s sound. In those cases, you generally add an apostrophe plus s if you naturally pronounce an extra s when you say the word out loud: Charles's new tie is fantastic. If you don't pronounce an extra s when you say the word, then leave it out: Ulysses' presentation is set for Monday.

2. Semicolons

The central task of the semicolon is to mark a break that is stronger than a comma but not as final as a period or full stop. That sounds easy enough, but it can be hard to tell when you should be linking two clauses with a semicolon rather than simply separating them into two sentences.

Typically, you want to use a semicolon when two main clauses balance each other and are too closely linked to be made into separate sentences, as in these two examples:

The road runs through a beautiful wooded valley; the railway line follows it.

Erik did not give me your keys; he gave me mine.

You can also use a semicolon to mark a stronger division in a sentence that already has commas: The study showed the following: 76% of surveyed firms monitor employee Web-surfing activities, with 65% blocking access to unauthorized Internet locations; over one-third of the firms monitor employee computer keystrokes; half reported storing and reviewing employee emails; 57% monitor employee telephone conduct, including the inappropriate use of voicemail.

3. Colons

The best way to differentiate the colon from the semicolon is that where the semicolon provides a strong division in a sentence, the colon provides a sense of forward motion.

There are three main uses of the colon:

  1. Between two main clauses in cases where the second clause explains or follows from the first, e.g. That is the secret to winning the game: have some patience.
  2. Introducing a list, e.g. The film was criticized for several reasons: a weak script, stiff acting, and poor special effects.
  3. Before a quotation, and sometimes direction speech, e.g. The poster read: 'Show is on 4 April'.

4. Ellipses

This 'dot dot dot' piece of punctuation is written with three dots, no more and no less, and is typically accompanied by a space on either side. Some style guides also call for a space between each ellipsis point. The ellipsis can be used for a few different purposes.

One common use is to represent excised or omitted text, especially in quoted passages, as in The journal entry said, 'He used to … go to the movies with us', where the ellipsis might be 'watch television and' in the original journal entry. Another use of ellipsis is to create ironic or dramatic effect, as in Do you mean that … you ate the ice cream? The ellipsis is also sometimes used to represent a continuation of a list, as in We danced the salsa, tango, rumba, the Twist

However, in recent years, people have started using the ellipsis in email and informal written communication to signify general pauses and hesitations, rather than pauses intended to create specific dramatic effect. For instance, it is easy to imagine the following email or text message: Well … I don't know … do you still want to watch the game?

This use of ellipses is frowned upon in formal settings; these pauses can be indicated otherwise with different punctuation. Rewritten in a more formal manner, the above sentence might read: Well, I don't know. Do you still want to watch the game?

5. Hyphens

The principal purpose of the hyphen is linking words and parts of words. This means that it appears in a wide variety of situations, linking all types of words. Rather than pick out all of the possible appearances of the hyphen in everyday writing, we will focus on one that people frequently get wrong: compound adjectives.

Compound adjectives are made up of a noun + an adjective, a noun + a participle, or an adjective + a participle. Many compound adjectives should be hyphenated. Some hyphenated examples are: user-generated, carbon-neutral, accident-prone, and good-looking.

Compound adjectives get tricky once a phrase or the word well gets involved. In these cases, up-to-date and well-known, for instance, you should use a hyphen when the compound comes before the noun (up-to-date security system and well-known chiropractor), but not when the compound comes after (this software is up to date and this chimpanzee is well known). Similarly, centuries should be hyphenated when used as adjectives (She is one of the best twentieth-century writers) but not when used as a noun (These paintings date from the seventeenth century).

6. Dashes

The hyphen's slightly longer cousin, the dash is another popular punctuation mark that not everyone is sure how to use.

In formal writing, the dash is used to mark off information or ideas that are not essential to an understanding of the rest of the sentence. For example, you might see: Once I have a free afternoon — I've been quite busy — I will meet you for lunch.

However, it has become quite common to see the dash used in sentences in the place of other punctuation marks, as in: It depends when you would like to visit — I'm home for all of October. (You might alternately use a semicolon in that instance.)

Even though dashes are common in informal writing, such as personal emails or blogs, it's best to use them sparingly when writing formally.

Presentare il lavoro sessuale come avvilente solo può avere senso quando si capisce che la soddisfazione del'eterosessualità di un uomo mediano onesto è avvilente. Attaccare la prostituzione, la pornografia o la sensualità dicendo che esiste al fine di soddisfare gli uomini solo può avere senso quando si capisce che piacere agli uomini mediani onesti è avvilente.

Diogo Aires Attaccare la sensualità può provenire anche da persone che non rientrano nei standard estetici o rifiutano di cambiare a loro. Mettere la colpa su un'estetica senza aver nemmeno andato in cerca di esso. Accettare il conformismo.

Abigail Pereira Aranha Il commento del collega +Astaroth Realista mi ha ricordato qualcosa che stavo per scrivere e ho dimenticato. Il commento del amico +Diogo Aires era molto buono, ma due componenti aggiuntivi ancora possono essere fatti.

1) Queste donne possono comunque creare una scala invertita dove loro sono in una posizione più alta. Questo non accade solo nel femminismo più bizarro.

2) Proprio a causa del disprezzo sociale per l'eterosessualità maschile, la donna fisicamente mediocre può essere sopravvalutata in relazione alla donna più vistosa anche nel ambito cristiano conservatore. Un esempio d'una donna brutta nella Bibbia: Lea (Gen. 29:17). Un esempio d'una bella donna: Batseba (2 Sam. 11:2, 3). È certo che Rachele, la sorella di Lea, era anche bella. Ma quando la bellezza di una donna è evidenziata nella Bibbia, o questo è quello di la evidenziare anche come serva di Dio, o questa bellezza è mostrata come una pietra d'inciampo.

Anche la Bibbia mostra che il sesso è sempre stato disponibile agli uomini con lo stato. Se loro hanno la disponibilità di arte erotico-pornografiche, prostitute e concubine, mentre la sessualità degli uomini in generale o il loro contatto stesso con una donna mediana sono molto limitati, il piacere sessuale per un uomo è anche una questione di privilegio. O meglio, l'eterosessualità era spregevole in tutti gli uomini, ma l'importanza sociale, che un tempo è stata raggiunta dalla guerra e in seguito potrebbe essere raggiunta da parte delle imprese, era una specie di licenza a un uomo per commettere l'eterosessualità come avrebbe potuto commettere omicidio, idolatria, o devianza di denaro pubblico.

Perché la pornografia commerciale, così come la conosciamo, ha cominciato e si ha concentrata sugli Stati Uniti e in alcuni paesi nella Europa sviluppata, e che è stato circa 50 anni fa? Diogo Aires E cosa succede a qualcosa repressa: diventa sotterranea e la gente ha "vergogna" di ammettere che a loro piace e la pratica. Anche se non ci fosse la pornografia in sé, c'era la sensualità e l'erotismo in altri generi come il terrore. Un esempio è "Slasher Halloween", in cui Jamie Lee Curtis appare mezza nuda.

Abigail Pereira Aranha +Diogo Aires, gattino, tu stai pensando come qualcuno che ha già preso questo scenario pronto. Ancora non hai capito e ti darò alcune domande a cui pensare o ricercare. Perché era la pornografia commerciale ha iniziata nei 1960, 1970 negli Stati Uniti e non in Brasile? Perché non è stato negli Stati Uniti nei 1930? Perché non è stato in India, o in Arabia Saudita, o in Venezuela? Hai visto quello che era considerato pornografia alla fine del XIX secolo, inizio del XX secolo?

Abigail Pereira Aranha (...) Gli uomini d'alte rango semplicemente sfuggono alla repressione generale a causa della posizione in cui sono. Ed è vero che un gruppo che trasgredisce le regole che sono imposte sulla popolazione generale anche dimostra potere. Noi non abbiamo esattamente un sistema politico anti-sessuale. Quello che abbiamo è una cultura anti-sessuale, che era ancora peggio prima il Capitalismo. E nessun uomo beneficio uomo di questo, ad eccezione di alcuni che fanno i soldi da reti criminali di prostituzione, per esempio. Chi trae più profitto dalla repressione sessuale maschile e chi più disturba personalmente la vita sessuale degli uomini è la donna tipica o la donna anche al di sotto della mediocrità. Le donne che sono sessualmente liberale o che sono solo lavoratrici del sesso per pagare le bollette non guadagnano molta ostilità da uomini ricchi o politici uomini, il pericolo, anche per l'integrità fisica, proviene quasi interamente da altre donne, soprattutto donne sposate. Gli uomini che agiscono a favore della repressione sessuale sono quelli che noi chiamiamo mangini, che per definizione pensano con la testa di una donna.

Questo è il grande problema. Il tutto non è il lavoro di una mafia, di un partito politico, o addirittura di una religione. Non c'è un gruppo di persone o anche un sistema politico che se viene deposto, termina il tutto. Questo è un aspetto della cultura ginocentrica. È come un virus informatico, in modo che la criminalizzazione della prostituzione, per esempio, è solo la macchina infetta a fare sciocchezze.

Abigail Pereira Aranha Spiegando meglio agli amici: perché le cinema dei paesi arabi non utilizzano l'erotismo che è stato citato qui? Se Mia Khalifa non era uscita dal Libano o Sunny Leone da India, sarebbero sono state porno star? Che fattibilità la pornografia come noi la conosciamo avrebbe in Medio Oriente? Gli uomini mediani nel Medio Oriente sono meno repressi che quelli qui?

Io ero esattamente scrivendo questo testo quando ascolto nella radio la canzone di Tina Turner "Private Dancer", che rappresenta una narrazione in prima persona da una spogliarellista di se stessa e del suo lavoro. La musica mi ha ricordato una cosa che ho dimenticato di dire: l'eterosessualità degli uomini è così disprezzata, e non solo quella degli uomini medi, che la soddisfazione di essa è vista come spazzatura, come regola generale, tra le lavoratrici sessuali stesse.

Présenter le travail du sexe comme dégradant peut seulement faire sens quand il est entendu que la satisfaction de l'hétérosexualité d'un homme médian honnête est dégradant. Attaquer la prostitution, la pornographie ou la sensualité en disant qu'elle existe pour satisfaire les hommes seulement peut avoir du sens quand il est entendu que faire plaisir à les hommes médians honnêtes est dégradant.

Diogo Aires Attaquer la sensualité peut également provenir de personnes qui ne correspondent pas aux normes esthétiques ou que refusent de changer pour eux. Mettre le blâme sur une esthétique sans avoir même allé à sa recherche. Accepter le conformisme.

Abigail Pereira Aranha Le commentaire de l'ami +Astaroth Realista m'a rappelé quelque chose que j'allais écrire et j'ai oublié. Le commentaire de l'ami +Diogo Aires était très bon, mais deux add-ons peuvent encore être faites.

1) Cettes femmes peuvent encore créer une échelle inversée où elles sont dans une position plus élevée. Cela ne se produit pas seulement dans le féminisme le plus bizarre.

2) Exactement à cause du mépris social de l'hétérosexualité masculine, la femme physiquement médiocre peut être surévaluée par rapport à la femme plus voyante, même dans le milieu chrétien conservateur. Un exemple d'une femme laide dans la Bible: Léa (Genèse 29:17). Un exemple d'une belle femme: Bath-Shéba (2 Sam. 11:2, 3). C'est certain que Rachel, la sœur de Léa, était aussi belle. Mais quand la beauté d'une femme est mise en évidence dans la Bible, ou c'est pour la souligner aussi comme une servante de Dieu, ou cette beauté est montrée comme une pierre d'achoppement.

Même la Bible montre que le sexe a toujours été disponible pour les hommes avec statut. S'ils ont la disponibilité des arts erotiques-pornographiques, des prostituées et des concubines alors que la sexualité de les hommes en général ou leur contact avec une femme médiane sont très limitées, le plaisir sexuel pour un homme est aussi une question de privilège. Ou plutôt, l'hétérosexualité était méprisable chez tous les hommes, mais la proéminence sociale, qui était autrefois atteinte par la guerre et par la suite pourrait être atteinte par les entreprises, était une sorte de licence pour un homme à commettre l'hétérosexualité comme il pouvait commettre meurtre, idolâtrie ou déviance de l'argent public.

Pourquoi la pornographie commerciale, telle que nous la connaissons, a commencé et s'est concentrée sur les États-Unis et certains pays de l'Europe développée, il y a environ 50 ans? Ce n'est pas seulement à cause du développement technologique de ces lieux, même si ce développement était essentiel pour que l'industrie pornographique existait. Oh, et la censure du sexe plus le mépris quotidien pour l'homme hétérosexual typique ont créé plus de désir pour la pornographie, qui était au début même un aspect de la rébellion sociopolitique pour certains militants de gauche. Mais la pornographie a survécu non seulement parce que nous avons toujours eu milliers de garçons hétérosexuals nés tous les jours, c'est aussi parce que le profit valait la peine.

Diogo Aires Et ce qui arrive à quelque chose de réprimé: se devient clandestin et les gens ont "honte" d'admettre qu'ils aiment et pratiquent. Même s'il n'y avait pas de pornographie elle-même, il y avait la sensualité et l'érotisme dans d'autres genres comme la terreur. Un exemple est le "Slasher Halloween", dans lequel Jamie Lee Curtis apparaît à moitié nue.

Abigail Pereira Aranha +Diogo Aires, chaton, tu penses comme quelqu'un qui a déjà pris ce scénario prêt. Tu ne comprenes toujours pas et je vais te donner quelques questions à réfléchir ou rechercher. Pourquoi la pornographie commerciale a-t-elle commencé dans les années 1960, 1970 aux États-Unis et non au Brésil? Pourquoi n'est-ce pas aux États-Unis dans les années 1930? Pourquoi n'est-ce pas en Inde, en Arabie Saoudite ou au Venezuela? As-tu vu ce qui a été considéré pornographie à la fin du XIXe siècle, début du XXe siècle?

Abigail Pereira Aranha (...) Les hommes de haut rang simplement échappent à la répression générale en raison de la position dans laquelle ils se trouvent. Et il est vrai qu'un groupe qui transgresse des règles imposées à la population générale démontre également pouvoir. Nous n'avons pas exactement un système politique anti-sexuel. Ce que nous avons est une culture anti-sexuelle, qui était encore pire avant le Capitalisme. Et aucun homme n'en bénéficie, à l'exception de quelques-uns qui font de l'argent à partir de réseaux criminels de prostitution, par exemple. Qui profite davantage de la répression sexuelle masculine et qui dérange le plus personnellement les vies sexuelles des hommes est la femme typique ou la femme même en dessous de la médiocrité. Les femmes qui sont sexuellement libérales ou qui ne sont travailleuses du sexe pour payer leurs factures ne gagnent pas beaucoup d'hostilité des hommes riches ou des politiciens hommes, le danger, même à l'intégrité physique, vient presque entièrement des autres femmes, particulièrement des femmes mariées. Les hommes qui agissent en faveur de la répression sexuelle sont ceux que nous appelons manginas, qui par définition pensent avec la tête d'une femme.

C'est le grand problème. Le tout n'est pas le travail d'une mafia, d'un parti politique ou même d'une religion. Il n'y a pas un groupe de personnes, ni même un système politique qui s'est déposé, se termine tout. C'est un aspect de la culture gynocentrique. C'est comme un virus informatique, donc la criminalisation de la prostitution, par exemple, est juste la machine infectée à faire sottises.

Je suis exactement en train d'écrire ce texte quand j'écoute à la radio la chanson de Tina Turner "Private Dancer", qui représente un récit en première personne d'une strip-teaseuse sur elle-même et son travail. La musique me rappelait encore une chose que j'avais oublié de dire: l'hétérosexualité des hommes est si méprisée, et pas seulement celle de les hommes moyens, que la satisfaction de celle-ci est considérée comme des ordures, en règle générale, parmi les travailleuses du sexe elles-mêmes.

Women who are sexually liberal or who are just sex workers to pay their bills do not gain much hostility from rich men or male politicians, the danger, even to physical integrity, comes almost entirely from other women, especially married women. The men who act in favor of the sexual repression are who we call manginas, who by definition think with a woman's head.

That is the big problem. The whole thing is not the work of a mafia, a political party, or even a religion. There is not a group of people or even a political system which if it is deposed, the whole thing ends. That is one aspect of the gynocentric culture. It's like a computer virus, so the criminalization of prostitution, for example, is just the infected machine doing nonsense.

If Mia Khalifa had not gone out from Lebanon or Sunny Leone from India, would they have been porn stars? What feasibility pornography as we know would have in the Middle East? I was exactly writing this text when I listen on the radio to the Tina Turner's song "Private Dancer", which represents a first-person narrative by a stripper about herself and her work. The music reminded me one more thing I forgot to say: the heterosexuality of men is so despised, and not just that of average men, that satisfying it is seen as rubbish, as a general rule, among the female sex workers themselves.

Presentar el trabajo sexual como degradante sólo puede tener sentido cuando se entiende que satisfacer la heterosexualidad de un hombre mediano honesto es degradante. Atacar la prostitución, la pornografía o la sensualidad diciendo que existe para satisfacer a los hombres sólo puede tener sentido cuando se entiende que agradar a los hombres medianos honestos es degradante.

Astaroth Realista En resumen: a los hombres prominentes, todo; a los medianos, regulaciones.

Diogo Aires Atacar la sensualidad también puede venir de personas que no se encajan en los estándares estéticos o se niegan a cambiar a ellos. Poner la culpa en una estética sin haber ido siquiera en busca de esa. Aceptar el conformismo.

Abigail Pereira Aranha El comentario del compañero +Astaroth Realista me recordó algo que iba a escribir y me olvidé. El comentario del amigo +Diogo Aires fue muy bueno, pero aún se pueden hacer dos complementos.

1) Estas mujeres pueden todavía crear una escala invertida donde ellas están en una posición más alta. Esto no sucede sólo en el feminismo más extraño.

2) Precisamente por el desprecio social por la heterosexualidad masculina, la mujer físicamente mediocre puede ser sobrevalorada en relación con la mujer más llamativa incluso en el medio cristiano conservador. Un ejemplo de mujer fea en la Biblia: Lea (Génesis 29:17). Un ejemplo de una mujer hermosa: Betsabé (2 Samuel 11:2, 3). Es cierto que Raquel, la hermana de Lea, también era hermosa. Pero cuando la belleza de una mujer es destacada en la Biblia, o bien esto es para destacarla también como una sirvienta de Dios, o esta belleza se muestra como una piedra de tropiezo.

Incluso la Biblia muestra que el sexo siempre ha estado disponible para los hombres con estatus. Si ellos tienen la disponibilidad de las artes erótico-pornográficas, las prostitutas y las concubinas, mientras que la sexualidad de los hombres en general o su contacto mismo con una mujer mediana son muy limitados, el placer sexual para un hombre es también una cuestión de privilegio. O más bien, la heterosexualidad era despreciable en todos los hombres, pero la prominencia social, que una vez era alcanzada por la guerra y después podría ser alcanzada por los negocios, era una especie de licencia para que un hombre cometiera la heterosexualidad como podía cometer asesinato, idolatría o desviación del dinero público.

Dado que la heterosexualidad masculina era despreciada, la pornografía era tratada como algo para los muchachos inmaduros, censurada o incluso prohibida por la ley. Ah, y la censura al sexo más el desprecio cotidiano por el hombre heterosexual típico creó más deseo por la pornografía, que fue al principio incluso un aspecto de la rebelión sociopolítica de algunos militantes izquierdistas. Pero la pornografía sobrevivió no sólo porque siempre hemos tenido miles de muchachos heterosexuales nacidos todos los días, sino también porque el beneficio valía la pena.

Diogo Aires Y que pasa con algo reprimido: se convierte en clandestino y la gente se "avergüenza" de admitir que les gusta y practica. Incluso si no había pornografía en sí, había sensualidad y erotismo en otros géneros como el terror. Un ejemplo es el "Slasher Halloween", en el que Jamie Lee Curtis aparece medio desnuda.

Todavía no entendiste y te daré algunas preguntas para pensar o investigar. ¿Por qué la pornografía comercial comenzó en los años 60, 70 en Estados Unidos y no en Brasil? ¿Por qué no fue en los Estados Unidos en la década de 1930? ¿Por qué no fue en la India, o en Arabia Saudí, o en Venezuela? ¿Has visto lo que se consideraba pornografía a finales del siglo XIX, principios del siglo XX?

Abigail Pereira Aranha (...) Los hombres de alto rango simplemente escapan a la represión general debido a la posición en la que se encuentran. Y es verdad que un grupo que transgrede las reglas que se imponen a la población en general también demuestra poder. No tenemos exactamente un sistema político anti-sexual. Lo que tenemos es una cultura anti-sexual, que fue incluso peor antes del Capitalismo. Y ningun hombre se beneficia de esto, a excepción de unos pocos que ganan dinero de redes criminales de prostitución, por ejemplo. Quien se beneficia más de la represión sexual masculina y quien más perturba personalmente la vida sexual de los hombres es la mujer típica o la mujer incluso por debajo de la mediocridad. Las mujeres que son sexualmente liberales o que son sólo trabajadoras del sexo para pagar sus cuentas no ganan mucha hostilidad de hombres ricos o políticos hombres, el peligro, incluso a la integridad física, proviene casi en su totalidad de otras mujeres, especialmente mujeres casadas. Los hombres que actúan a favor de la represión sexual son los que llamamos manginas, que por definición piensan con la cabeza de una mujer.

Ese es el gran problema. Todo esto no es obra de una mafia, de un partido político o incluso de una religión. No hay un grupo de personas o incluso un sistema político que si es depuesto, todo termina. Ese es un aspecto de la cultura ginocentrica. Es como un virus informático, por lo que la criminalización de la prostitución, por ejemplo, es sólo la máquina infectada haciendo tonterías.

Abigail Pereira Aranha Explicando mejor a los amigos: ¿por qué el cine de los países árabes no utiliza el erotismo que aquí se cita? Si Mia Khalifa no hubiera salido del Líbano o de Sunny Leone de la India, ¿hubieran sido estrellas del porno? ¿Qué factibilidad la pornografia como conocemos tendría en el Medio Oriente? ¿Son los hombres medianos del Oriente Medio menos reprimidos que los de aquí?

La música me recordó una cosa más que me olvidé decir: la heterosexualidad de los hombres es tan despreciada, y no sólo la de los hombres promedios, que la satisfacción de esa es vista como una basura, como regla general, entre las trabajadoras sexuales mismas.
